In April 3rd 1899 the first German Shepherd, as we know the breed today, is oficially registered. This dog grandfather is an absolutely white coated male, white like many others used by cattle and sheep shepherds at that time, they used this white dogs to distinguish them from wolves.
As said, in that period the official standard of the German Shepherd was created. In the beginning all colours werw accepted, it was in the first decades of the 20th century when the whites were excluded, therefore persecuted and almost wiped out in Europe.
Fortunately the White Shepherd was already spread in North America, raised and protected by farmers. The breed turned out to be called "American Canadian White Shepherd".
The first White Shepherd club was founded in the 70´s in America. Mean while the breed appeared again in Europe. Firstly in Switzerland and Denmark. Germany will come next. Slowly the European cinologic societies began to open their stud books to the White Shepherd.
It was the dog "lobo", born in 1966, the first White Shepherd to be registered in Europe, specifically in Switzerland. After an immeasurable job the eight dogs, with a three generation pedigree non repeated members between them, made it possible. The breed was already recognized in switzerland 1991. Then came the Netherlands (1992), the Cheq Republic, Austria and Denmark.
Finally in 2003 the F.C.I. recognized the breed. With the name of "Berger Blanc Suisse". The White Shepherd made it.
The rest of the history is being written these days. It´s up to all of us to establish this breed to the place it deserves.
